What is Play Therapy?

Play Therapy is a form of counselling or psychotherapy. It aims to build a child’s ability to develop healthy and resilient relationships, and to work though traumatic experiences.

Pre-occupying difficult feelings can make learning at school or managing feelings impossible.

Addressing difficult emotions through play provides a layer of story or metaphor to what is being shared and felt. Metaphor can provide a degree of removal from experience for the child.

Children can play what they struggle to say, children can play to explain their way.  Through play children can discover and rehearse different ways of understanding and coping with difficult feelings.

I offer the child a range of play and creative materials, for them to express themselves in whatever way feels right.

These include clay, art materials, puppets, sand and small world objects, role play, stories and games.

I work closely with every parent, carer and professional involved in the child's life, to ensure that the child or young person gets the best support possible.

Who is Individual Play Therapy for?

Some of these may be:

  • Has nightmares or struggles to sleep
  • Is at risk of being or has been excluded from school
  • Has experienced any type of trauma

Who can benefit from Group Play Therapy?

I may see children in a small group, where every member of the group is experiencing similar difficulties.

Some of the groups I can offer are:

  • Bereavement
  • Transitions (may be going from primary to secondary school or starting a new school)
  • Difficulties with peers
  • Self esteem

The number of group sessions is set and is usually between 8 and 12
