Before I start sessions with a child or young person, I will meet with the parent / carer. It is a chance for me to learn more about why the child / young person has been referred and what they have experienced. It is helpful for me to know as much information as possible and to be kept updated with any new information that arises throughout therapy.
Each Session lasts 45 minutes. Each child or young person will have a minimum of 12 sessions. However, more sessions may be needed. I will meet with the referrer and parent / carer after a few weeks to decide whether further sessions are required.
Consistency is vital and therefore sessions take place at the same time each week.
There will be a variety of toys and creative materials for the child / young person to choose from. These include art and craft, masks, clay, sandtray therapy, music, puppets, books, games, role play and more.
There is no expectation on the child or young person to do or say anything. The child or young person chooses what they use and how they spend their session. I am there to support them and to offer extra insight. I may offer some directive activities if I feel they may benefit the child or young person.
I am able to offer advice and suggestions to parents / carers and school staff when needed.
Due to the confidential nature of Play Therapy, I am not able to give information about what the child has said. However, I can keep staff and parents updated with themes and other points.
